The Turku Archipelago and Archipelago Sea are diverse habitats of wildflowers, berries, mushrooms, birds and marine life. Near the shore, the air carries the scents of the Baltic Sea, wet rock, seaweed and coastal plants. The familiar “smell of the sea” is not simply salt: part of it could come from dimethyl sulfide, or DMS, a compound connected with marine microorganisms and phytoplankton. Even seabirds can use this scent as a clue when searching for food.
A few steps inland, the scent can change completely. Pine forests release aromatic compounds called terpenes. One of them, alpha-pinene, is responsible for much of the characteristic smell associated with pine trees.
Nature does not always smell rosy like perfume – not so pleasant smells are part of a living archipelago. Exploring Saaristo through scent means noticing the whole range.
Then there are the scents created by people: wood smoke, coffee, fresh linen, tarred boats, old timber buildings, food cooking in harbour restaurants and bread cooling at local bakeries.
The natural and human-made scents together create the unique scentscape we think makes our destination the best-smelling place in the world.

Finland is known for its great air quality. According to IQAir’s 2025 data, Finland’s annual average concentration of fine particulate matter, or PM2.5, was 5.2 micrograms per cubic metre — placing it among the cleanest countries included in the report. Air quality varies by location, weather and season, and Finland monitors it continuously.
More than 75% of Finland’s land area is covered with forest. In relative terms, Finland is the most forested country in Europe. Finland’s population is also spread over a large area: much of the land is far from busy roads and concentrated urban activity.
For travellers the relative lack of heavy urban smells can make quieter natural scents easier to notice: damp moss, pine needles, the first autumn frost or smoke drifting from a distant sauna compared to more built environments and bigger cities.

Local businesses share the scents that define their corners of the archipelago – and welcome you to experience them for yourself. Smell birchwood smoke over dinner at Kakolanruusu, sip freshly brewed coffee at Café Qwensel or unwind in a traditional sauna with Saariston Saunottaja. These local experiences help make the case for Saaristo as the world’s best-smelling destination – and you can book them on your next visit.
